Millennium Morning Project Shapes a Future of Innovation

BAC’s main Convention exhibit, “A Heritage of Independence, A Future of Innovation.”

This year marks the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers’ 140th year of improving the quality of life for masonry craftworkers. Despite facing unparalleled change and challenges in the construction industry, the labor movement, and the world, the Union is well positioned to continue to serve members even more effectively for the next 140 years and beyond, thanks to the recommendations outlined in its strategic plan – the Millennium Morning Report (MMP).

Launched at BAC’s 2000 Convention and adopted unanimously by the Executive Council in May 2004, the MMP’s findings and recommendations zero in on the steps required to allow BAC to anticipate and respond to change in ways that create and expand work opportunities for members, and ensure that our Union will continue to grow and prosper in
the future.

“The Millennium Morning Report provides the road map to good jobs for masonry craftworkers, greater financial security and better working conditions, while keeping us at the top of our profession for generations to come,” says BAC President John J. Flynn. “It underscores and supports our heritage of independence and points the way toward a future of innovation.”

Through the MMP, the Executive Council engaged in a comprehensive, detailed, rigorous process of research, self-analysis, and evaluation. The Council reached out to experts from all segments of the industry and engaged in wide-ranging discussions on the issues facing construction, masonry and labor. The MMP also relied on a data-driven study of industry trends and market share, and received extensive input from Local leaders and members.

After reviewing the external factors affecting BAC’s strategic leverage and the internal factors impacting the Union, the Executive Council crafted the Union-wide strategy for the future detailed in the MMP report. It includes five key components:

  • Increasing masonry’s market share by proactively identifying new materials, training members in their use, and working to change building codes in favor of masonry products.
  • Increasing BAC’s competitive position through an innovative marketing campaign conducted with the International Masonry Institute, and strategically targeting those regions, markets and sectors where the opportunities to expand the Union’s share of masonry work are the greatest.
  • Recruiting and retaining the best masonry craftworkers of the future through aggressive and highly targeted organizing.
  • Strengthening BAC’s leverage for members by maximizing its pension power, and political and legislative clout.
  • Staying ahead of competition through continued world-class training.
    The MMP recommendations were reflected in the Convention’s main exhibit, “A Heritage of Independence, A Future of Innovation.”
