Plaster Winners

From left, second place winner Jeronimo Esparza, first place winner Juan Alcala, and third place winner Steve Brandonisio, all members of Local 56 IL.

On September 22nd, plaster contestants were called on to demonstrate the proper method of using veneer plaster on a ceiling application by taping joints on the wall, then doing a scratch and double-coat. Other requirements included creating a veneer plaster wall, as well as a ceiling cornice made from a template of their own making. Part of the cornice’s construction was done on the table, then applied to the wall and smoothed out. Contestants were also required to do a back-grabbing of an EIFS application. Local 56 Illinois apprentices took all three winning spots.

First place winner Juan Alcala of Local 56 IL.

First place winner Juan Alcala began working in the trade two years ago. The former restaurant chef decided to become a BAC plasterer after a friend told him about the good pay and benefits. His brother, a BAC member, encouraged him to start an apprenticeship. The District Council Training Center (DCTC) program was hard, said Alcala, but “they taught me right.” Regarding the Contest, he said that winning was “a big surprise and a dream come true.” His family considers him a hero and he now has more faith in his abilities. Alcala encourages other apprentices saying, “There is nothing to lose and everything to gain. Do not be afraid.” And to the Union he said, “Thank you for teaching me. Thank you for everything.”

Second place winner Jeronimo Esparza was introduced to the trade by his brothers and brother-in-law, but he credits the teaching styles of DCTC Instructors Mike Hooper and Art Johnston for his success. “They take their time and show their students how it’s done. If it wasn’t for them, I wouldn’t be here.”

Third place winner Steve Brandonisio decided to join BAC for the benefits and training available at the DCTC, and even though he has finished his class requirements, he continues to go there. “Win or lose, I made a lot of friends, and had a good time,” said Brandonisio.

“We are very proud of the work they’ve done to get to this point,” said Local 56 IL Business Manager Timothy Aikens.
