Local 1 Newfoundland/Labrador Opens Doors to New Site for BAC Masonry College
Issue 6 - 2007

BAC Masonry College’s new location and Local 1 NL’s ongoing partnership with IMI have resulted in expanded training resources, including these new computers.

BAC Masonry College, which delivers Local 1 Newfoundland/Labrador’s growing pre-apprentice and journey-level training programs, opened its doors to a larger, more permanent location in the Newfoundland provincial capital of St. John’s on September 10th.

In September, Local 1 NL’s training center, BAC Masonry College, moved to a larger, better equipped site in St. John’s.

The new facility will enable Local 1 NL to increase both the number of pre-apprenticeship trainees and the services available to students, such as a fully equipped resource room and seven new computers. “Being a partner with the International Masonry Institute has been an integral part of our ability to expand our training reach,” said Local 1 Business Manager John Leonard, adding that it will go a long way toward advancing the Local’s goal of “supplying greater numbers of apprentices and certified journeypersons to the masonry industry in the months and years ahead.”

BAC Masonry College began offering journey-level training in concrete finishing and bricklaying in 2005. A year later, the College accepted its first pre-apprenticeship class, which coincided with the hiring of instructors Melvin Sparkes and Michelle Pitcher. Today, Sparkes continues as a bricklaying instructor at the College. Pitcher teaches related courses such as Workplace Correspondence, Quality Assurance, and Entrepreneurship. All members of the 2006 class graduated successfully, and, with one exception, are currently employed in the masonry industry with plans to return to the College in January to complete their advanced level training.
