OLRB Does An About-Face
October - November 2004
Recent actions by the Ontario Labour Relations Board (OLRB) on matters involving BACU and the International Union with BAC Locals 6, 7, and 25 in Ontario have ostensibly reversed a series of earlier rulings, which had conceded significant legal ground to the IU.
As the result of numerous applications for certification brought by BACU earlier this year in Ontario, employers and union officials were eager for the OLRB to rule in a timely, decisive manner. In April, however, OLRB Vice Chair David McKee ordered mediation by all parties, giving them until June 1st to reach agreement. Locals 6 and 25 ON signed a settlement agreement with BACU. Local 7 CN and the IU were not parties to the agreement.
“This has been a long struggle,” said BAC President John J. Flynn, “and despite the OLRB’s disappointing decisions of late, we will continue to fight for the representational rights for our members in Ontario.” Members with questions are urged to call the Canadian Office toll free 1-877-276-7774.
