North Central Region
Local 4 Indiana/Kentucky

Local 4 Indiana/Kentucky kept busy this summer hosting two Local Apprentice Contests – the tile competition was held on June 22nd and the brick on July 13th.

Brick
A total of 29 contestants were divided into three categories – 1st, 2nd and 3rd year apprentices. In the 3rd year category, Dustin Louck came in first place, Kyle Higham in second and Don Summar in third. In the 2nd year group, Craig Glaser took top honors, followed by Seth Ostler and Tim Hoopingarner. Among the 1st year apprentices, Stuart McManus took first place, Wes Myers came in second, and Tom Barzyk took third. Winners received cash prizes and moved on to the North Central Regional Brick Contest in Addison, Illinois.

Judging the competition were members Jerry Kusk, Irvin Overmyer, Jerry Sandman, Bob Kinnett, Bill Lee, Charles Kanning, and Marc Schneider, Job Corps Instructor Jonas Elmore, member and signatory contractor Steve Russell, and Evan Sutton of the Masonry Contractors Association.

Tile
Tile contestants were charged with constructing a 4¼ x 4¼ wall tile with a diamond pattern and a 2x2 floor tile set fresh in a mud bed. Adding to the challenge, two walls with corners needed to be floated with wall mud. Five apprentices competed in the daylong competition.

Trina Carr took first place followed by David Rose and John McCammon. Each winner was awarded a notched trowel trophy mounted on a marble base and plated in gold, silver and bronze respectively. Trina Carr advanced to the North Central Regional Tile Contest in Kansas City, Missouri.

Judging the competition were Local 4 members Lewis Carraro, Herschell Waltz and Ray Powell, and IU Regional Representative and Tile/Marble/Terrazzo Craft Director John Mason. Overseeing the event were Local 4 Secretary-Treasurer Jerry Brown, and Field Representatives Mike Avila, Matt Singer, Kevin McClanahan, Dale Johnsen and Greg Waltz. Local 4 Instructors Dan Claphen, Kevin Thomas, Greg Tucker and Scott Wooldridge also assisted.
