Local 15 Missouri/Kansas held their Apprenticeship & Training Bricklaying Contest on June 9, 2007 at its Kansas City Training Center. Fifteen contestants participated in the competition, which consisted of a three and a half hour project and one-hour written exam.
The competition was overseen by Local 15 Training Director Don Hunt and Bricklaying Instructor Chuck Dykes. Masonry Superintendent for Dicarlo Construction, Bob Quayle, served as Head Judge. Also judging were Masonry Field Supervisor for JE Dunn Construction Company Bill Swisher, Project Manager/Estimator for Hoffman Cortez General Contractors Rick Riley, and Masonry Field Supervisor for DMI Construction Travis Claypole.
Contestants were judged in 11 major categories – plumb, level, range, height and coursing, layout, tooling and neatness, trowel manipulations, level and ruler manipulations, mortar joints, craftsmanship and neatness, and safety.
Michael Kimberling was awarded first place, Scott Lawson took second and Daniel Beemer third.
Training Director Hunt said of the event, “The hands-on portion of the contest was very close – they all did an outstanding job.”
All winners received a new Smith Level, as well as the chance to compete at the North Central Regional Brick Contest.
