On July 27, 2007, Local 52 Illinois hosted the North Central Regional PCC Apprentice Contest in Chicago. Eight apprentices participated in the event.
After completion of the written exam, contestants moved to the hands-on portion of the competition, where they installed lintel with a drip lip, flashing with end dams, a termination bar, weeps and matching brick. They were then instructed to tuckpoint the brick side of the mock-up with a flat flush joint. During the stone portion, contestants were required to set a loose stone with two 4” pins, point the mock-up with a flat flush joint and patch a spall on the stone wall’s corner with Edison Coatings Stone patch material. Contestants then caulked 24 linear feet of sealant with GE Silpruf on a limestone wall, and finally, tied several knots and set up a shackle with a cable and three fist grips.
Local 52 apprentices Florin Bejerea, Carlos Jimenez, Carmine Chieco and Stan Radzik won first, second, third and fourth place, respectively. Jon Sprachmann of 5 OH came in fifth place. First, second and third place contestants received awards, and all five finalists will go on to the International Apprentice Contest.
The Contest was organized by Local 52 IL Apprentice Coordinator Michael Hunt and Apprentice Instructors Hector Arellano, Dave Laninga, Dave Tedeschi, Mike Turner, Gary Wittenberg and Andy Kwicien. IU Regional Representative Tom McClanahan also attended the event. Local 52 members John Polivka and retirees Jules Guiesmeyer and Bob Reining, along with retired IU PCC Craft Director Joe Stewart, served as judges.
