Local 3 Massachusetts/Maine/New Hampshire’s Apprentice Contest on June 16, 2007 began with breakfast and some inspiring words from Boston Mayor Thomas Menino. This special start was followed by a three hour competition, which took place at the Local’s Training Center in Dorchester, Massachusetts.
The competition was divided into three crafts – brick, tile and PCC. Twenty contestants participated in the brick competition, seven participants competed in tile, and 10 in PCC.
Executive Vice President and Apprentice Director Richard Forcione coordinated the event. Judging the brick category were Local 3 members Robert Petrillo, Joe Goncalves and Donavon Stennett. Members David Maturo and Michael Maher judged the PCC competition, and Robert Troiano judged the tile competition.
Taking top honors in brick were Erik Spero, followed by Andrew Cabral, Matthew Rumson and Emerson Coleman.
Gary D’Ambra, Jr. took first place in tile with Kevin Fetty coming in second.
Alfred Minor was the first place winner in PCC, with Ryan Anderson and Jonatthan Mezmar coming in second and third, respectively.
All winners received cash prizes and the chance to compete at the Northeast Regional Contest held in July. John Cepeda, winner of the Local’s 2006 brick competition, also advanced to the Regional level.
