In mid-June, apprentices were joined by Local officers as they headed to Houston, Texas for the South Regional Brick Apprentice Contest held at the Local 5 OK/AR/TX BAC/IMI Training Center. IU Regional Representative and Stone Craft Director Butch Rovder coordinated the event with help from IMI Instructor Keith Behrens.
Contestants began the competition on Friday, June 15th with a written exam. On Saturday, June 16th, apprentices competed in the three-hour “hands-on” portion of the event. Behrens and retired Local officer Jack Stubbs served as judges.
Taking first and second place in the contest were Local 1 MD/VA/DC apprentices Josh Guptill and Matthew Beck, respectively, and Felix Navarro of Local 5 TN earned third place. All contestants received cash prizes and the three winners will advance to the International Apprentice Contest.
