On June 9, 2007, Local 13 Nevada, under the leadership of President Carlos Aquin, hosted the West Regional Apprentice Contest in Las Vegas, with fifty apprentices competing in brick, marble, and tile.
Apprentices from Local 18 CA dominated the tile competition with Jose Licea coming in first, Ignacio Sanchez in second, and Jose Perez in third place. Local 1 HI apprentice Anthony Freitas, Jr. claimed the number four spot, while Solomon Nutter and Scott McMahon of Local 1 WA took fifth and sixth place. Local 3 CA apprentice Aristeo Delgado placed seventh.
Bryan Pritchett of Local 3 CA earned top honors in the marble competition. Local 13 NV apprentices Steve Hasek, Jr., Sal Formica and Scott Bliss took second, third and fourth place. Fifth place was awarded to Victor Zarza of Local 3 CA, sixth place went to 1 WA’s Cory Evons, and David Bravo of 4 CA claimed seventh place.
Winners in the brick competition, starting with first place, were Justin Jones of Local 3 CA, Jacob Amos of 1 OR, Angelo Anselmo of 7 CO, Jose Perez of 3 CA, Anthony Richardson of 13 NV, Ryan Green of 3 CA, and Thomas King of 7 CO.
IU West Regional Director David Sheppard, retired IU Regional Director John Franco, and retired Local 4 CA President Frank Collins judged the brick competition. IU Collective Bargaining Director Mike Maness, Local 13 NV member Jerry Wyatt of Superior Tile & Marble, and Brandon Zahnow of Local 1 WA served as the tile judges. IU Regional Representative and Tile/Marble/Terrazzo Craft Director John Mason, Chris Kreitlow of Local 13 NV, and Project Manager Bill Markworth were the marble judges.
Qualified winners will advance to the International Contest.
