Local 1 Hawaii

In late July, Local 1 Hawaii hosted the 17th Annual Hawaii State and 10th Annual Invitational Apprenticeship Contest. Registration and orientation began on the 27th at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Resort and Hotel with the Contest taking place at Honolulu Community College on the 28th.

Contestants had six and a half hours to complete their projects. In the ceramic tile competition, Juan Berdon took first place with Anthony Freitas, Jr. in second and Wayne Yamamoto in third. In the block competition, Stephen Verano took top honors followed by Steven Britt and Kailana Flores.

Local 1 Business Manager Nolan Moriwaki and IU Executive Vice President Gerald O’Malley recognized the apprentices’ accomplishments at the awards banquet.

“Seeing this quality of work,” O’Malley said, “I am convinced the future of our trades is in good hands.”

The many volunteers were also thanked for another successful Contest.
