Local 5 Oklahoma/Arkansas Member Honored by President
Clinton
Bill Cox has been politically active for more than 50 years.
His service to his Union, his community, and the Democratic
Party stems from a deep concern for his neighbors in his
native Grady County, Oklahoma. The retired Local 5 OK/AR
bricklayer has served as an officer of his Local Union and
the state AFL-CIO, and as county Democratic Party chair.
Before leaving office, President Clinton recognized Cox with
a special gift and letter, excerpted here:
"In facing the challenges of the past eight years, I have
drawn strength from the legacy of those who have inhabited
the White House before me. The memory of one of our greatest
leaders…Franklin Delano Roosevelt…has been
especially inspirational."
A handsome print of FDR’s desk, signed by President
and Mrs. Clinton, accompanied the letter.

Correction
The November/December 2000 Journal mistakenly ran a photo
of Local 5 OK/AR member Bill Cox in connection with a feature
about Local 5 PA member Lester Baver (Local Compass, "Local
5 Pennsylvania Veteran Honors WWII Army Unit," page 13).
The correct photo of Mr. Baver appears at left.
