BAC United
August - September 2001

On September 11, 2001 the IU's Executive Council was gathering to begin the final day of its Fall meeting. As news of the terrorist attacks spread, all thoughts turned to our members, officers, IU headquarters' staff, and their loved ones who could have been in the proximity of the World Trade Center and the Pentagon at the time of the attack.

As I write this letter we are still waiting to hear about the extent of the loss to BAC families. We are hoping and praying that it is minimal. The thoughts and prayers of the IU's Executive Board are with all of the victims and their survivors - our brothers and sisters in the labor movement.

Our country suffered a devastating blow on September 11th. But we, as a country, as a Union, as a people have persevered during other difficult times. This time, as in the past, we will rise above it and survive. These terrorists may have damaged the bricks and mortar, but they have not damaged our spirit. With your help, our country will rebuild and become stronger. We will prevail.

During the last several weeks we have seen acts of heroism by firefighters, police and other emergency personnel, and our own  members. We have seen acts of kindness that cannot be described, and we have heard from many of you asking how you can help. Our heartfelt thanks go out to our courageous members who have risked life and limb to lend whatever help they could during the grim aftermath of these attacks.
