Remembering Our Brothers and Sisters

Hundreds of union members were injured, killed or are still unaccounted for as a result of the September 11 tragedies. We honor and remember them. They will not be forgotten.
As of this writing:

  • More than 300 Firefighters (IAFF) and 85 Police Officers who went to help with rescue efforts at the World Trade Center may have been killed when the towers collapsed.
  • Hotel Employees & Restaurant Employees (HERE) Local 100 had 47 members working at the Windows on the World restaurant in the first tower who are unaccounted for.
  • The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) reports 16 members missing in New York.
  • The New York City District Council of Carpenters says hundreds of members were working at the World Trade Center. Fifteen members are unaccounted for.
  • The International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE) has lost two members of IUOE Local 2, and six are still missing. Locals 30 and 94 had 30 members on the job and are trying to track them down.
  • The Painters and Allied Trades Union announced two members are dead and three missing at the World Trade Center.
  • The New York City Building and Construction Trades Council reports that other Building Trades members working in the World Trade Center have not been accounted for.
  • Communications Workers of America (CWA) may have lost as many as 214 members between the attacks on New York, the Pentagon, and the airliners that crashed.
  • Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 32BJ had roughly 350 members working in the World Trade Center at the time of the attack. As of this writing, 62 remain missing.
  • American Federation of State County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) reports that 45 emergency services workers are missing. More than 40 members of its affiliate, the Civil Service Employees Association, are also missing.
  • The American Federation of Teachers (AFT) lost three District of Columbia teachers on the flight that crashed into the Pentagon.
  • The Public Employees Federation (PEF), a joint organization of the AFT and the SEIU, had 300 members employed in the World Trade Center—more than 50 members are unaccounted for.
  • Twenty-five flight attendants, members of Association of Flight Attendants (AFA) and the American Airlines flight attendants’ union, and 8 pilots, members of the Airline Pilots Association (ALPA) and the American Airlines pilots’ union were killed.
  • The Office & Professional Employees International Union (OPEIU) reports 16 members at the World Trade Center
    missing.
What You Can Do

The International Union has donated $50,000 to the Building Trades Family Relief Fund, and the AFL-CIO Union Community Sept. 11 Relief Fund, and encourages every member to do what they can on an individual basis to help. The following is a list of some of the funds that have been established to aid the injured and families of victims of the tragedy:

  • Washington, D.C., and Northern Virginia Disaster Fund: Mail checks to the fund at 1925 K Street, N.W., Suite 410, Washington, DC 20006. In D.C., make checks payable to the Community Services Agency. Call 202-857-0480 for more information.
  • Give blood. To find out how to donate blood in your community, please call the Red Cross at 1-800-GIVE-LIFE.

  • CWA Disaster Relief Fund—Make contributions payable to the fund and mail to CWA Disaster Relief Fund, c/o Janine Brown, CWA, 501 Third St., N.W. Washington, D.C. 20001.
  • Flight Attendants—Send contributions payable to the Flight Attendant Disaster Relief Fund, 1275 K Street, N.W. Fifth Floor, Washington, D.C. 20005.
  • Hotel Employees & Restaurant Employees New York Assistance Fund—Make contributions payable to the fund and mail to HEREIU, 1219 28th St., N.W., Washington, D.C. 20007.
  • IAM 911 Disaster Relief Fund—Send contributions made payable to the fund to the IAM Community Services Department, 9000 Machinist Place, Upper Marlboro, MD 20772-2687. For more information, visit www.goiam.org.
