IU Prepares New Leaders

BAC President John J. Flynn greets a group of New Leaders during their tour of IU headquarters. From left are Willy Cavin of Local 1 WA, Curtis Gilmore of 21 IL, John Mains of 9 PA, Anthony LaCava of 1 NY, Nick Tirino of 2 NY, Flynn, Steve Preziozi of 4 NJ, and Nick Marinopoulos of 21 IL.

On March 17, 27 newly elected or appointed Local Union officers and field representatives gathered at the George Meany Center for Labor Studies in Silver Spring, Maryland to begin the BAC New Leaders’ program. The week-long training, conducted by the International Union, focuses on the core responsibilities that face new BAC officials, such as collective bargaining, organizing, trade jurisdiction, benefits, political action, and legal affairs. Participants also visit nearby locations of historical significance to the Union and labor history.

Local 13 NV Field Representative Scott Fromm, third from left, helps apprentices at IMI’s National Training Center (NTC) keep things on the level during a day-long session on industry development. Jim Boland, far right, conducts a New Leaders’ course on “Functions of a Union.”
