IU Brings Art, History to New Headquarters
Visitors to the International Union’s new Washington,
DC headquarters are greeted by two examples of our members’ craftsmanship
that showcase BAC’s history and dedication to excellence.
The
first is a 6' x 22' tile mural, pictured below, located
in the elevator lobby. The mural, created by United Scenic
Artist Union member Kathleen Farrell for the Union’s
2000 Convention, is entitled “Timeline of Craftsmanship
and Diversity.” It depicts BAC members at work throughout
the Union’s history. Under the direction of IMI Special
Projects Coordinator Matthew Redabaugh, the painting was
transferred to 6"x 6" ceramic tile through a sublimation
process that uses heat and pressure to transfer images to
tile with special inks.
Inside the main reception area, visitors
immediately eye the BAC tablets — official symbol
of the International Union. Crafted in terrazzo by Local
32 Michigan President Peter Accica (shown
below, right, with President Flynn), the tablets were presented
to BAC President John Flynn by Local 32’s officers
at the Union’s 2000 Convention.
The move, which took
place in February, allowed the International Union to take
advantage of a favorable commercial real estate
market and to save on accelerating maintenance costs at
the IU’s former home. |
