Attention All BAC Reservists and National Guard Members

BAC members who are reservists or National Guard members may be called to active duty with the U.S. Armed Forces. In appreciation and recognition of the sacrifices they will be called upon to make, the IU Executive Board has taken the following action:

  • Suspended the International Union dues obligations of all BAC members while on active duty on or after September 11, 2001; and
  • Authorized Local Unions and District Councils to exempt such members from the payment of their Local Union or District Council dues, provided that they have taken proper action authorizing such a dues exemption. Please contact your Local Union or ADC if you have questions about their policy in this regard.

Reservists and National Guard members should also be aware that, by law, they are exempt from any break in service from their pension plan(s) while on active duty. For further information, please contact the International Pension Fund (IPF) at 1-888-880-2222, or your Local’s pension fund office.

Finally, mortgage and rental relief is available to National Guard members and reservists on active duty under the provisions of the “Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Relief Act of 1940.” This law prohibits all creditors, including mortgage lenders, credit card companies, and car finance companies, from charging interest of more than 6 percent. In accordance with this law, active-duty servicemen and women are eligible for:

  • Reduced interest rate on mortgage payments.
  • Reduced interest rate on credit card debt.
  • Protection from eviction if your rent is $1,200 or less.
  • Delay of all civil court actions, such as bankruptcy, foreclosure, or divorce proceedings.

Relief is limited to those whose household income is “materially affected” by enlistment or activation, but bankers have indicated that those who seek relief generally won’t be challenged. For more information, call HUD at 1-888-297-8685 between 7 am and 7 pm CT on weekdays.

If you or one of your family members has been called up for duty, please drop the Journal a note telling us about you and your family’s service to the country.
