Michigan Labor Legacy Landmark Honors Working People

Crafted from 30 tons of steel, the 63-foot structure titled “Transcending,” stands as a gift from organized labor to the City of Detroit.

The new Michigan Labor Legacy Landmark, on the grounds of Detroit’s Walter P. Reuther Library, is a fitting tribute to Michigan’s rich labor history and the workers who built American industry. The monument’s stainless steel open-ended archway soars over Jefferson Avenue. Union members, including members of Local 32 Michigan, worked on the project. More than 1,000 rank-and-file union members contributed $100 or more to help build the arch. Unions and other local organizations joined together to raise additional funds to reach a total of $1.4 million. Each donor will have a listing or plaque on the Landmark’s Wall of Honor. Contributions are welcome and space has been reserved for future donors. For more information, contact the Michigan Labor Legacy Project, Walter P. Reuther Library, 5401 Cass, Detroit MI 48202, or on the web at www.laborlegacy.org.
