2003 Canadian Bates Scholars Named

Jason Martyn (left) attends the University of New Brunswick. Scholar-athlete Jonathan White (right), is a freshman at Memorial University of Newfoundland.

Congratulations to this year’s Canadian recipients of BAC’s Harry C. Bates Scholarship: Jonathan White, the son of Local 1 Newfoundland member David White; and Jason Martyn, whose father, Walter, is a member of Local 8 New Brunswick. The two recipients will receive annual stipends toward their college expenses for up to four years.

Jonathan White just began his freshman year at the Memorial University of Newfoundland, where he is majoring in biochemistry. Hoping to eventually combine his science acumen with an interest in medicine, Jonathan plans to attend medical school and become a physician. In the meantime, new academic demands and his outside interests, including sports of all kinds (he was captain of his high school hockey team), and the electric guitar will help sharpen his time-management skills.

Jason Martyn, also a freshman, attends the University of New Brunswick, where he is enrolled in a concurrent degree program that will earn him both a Bachelor of Science, and a Bachelor of Computer Science.

For Jason, his father’s BAC membership has impacted his life in every way, including teaching him the values that he holds dear – “hard work, dedication, a drive for perfection in everything I do – all come from my father, and these have shaped the life I lead.”
