Local 4 NJ Volunteers Build Union County September
11th Memorial
Faced with a $35,000 funding shortfall, Union County, New
Jersey appealed to Local 4 NJ for help in memorializing 60
county residents who perished on September 11, 2001. Local
4 Business Manager Gerald Della Salla responded by dispatching
13 apprentices and journeymen. Local 4 volunteers, top right, erected a retaining wall and cut and laid more
than 3,800 square feet of pavers in less than half the projected
time. Pictured right, the project used interlocking pavers
forming a commemorative ribbon, a replica of the Statue of
Liberty’s torch, and structural iron remnants from
the World Trade Center.
In a letter to BAC President John
J. Flynn, the Chairman of the Union County September 11th
Memorial Committee, said
“The
County owes a tremendous debt of gratitude to BAC Local #4
Morristown, NJ. BAC Local #4 came through with volunteer
labor to erect
the retaining wall in less than 1 week, which was estimated
to take over 2 weeks…Mr.
Gerald Della Salla, the business manager for BAC Local #4,
was extremely cooperative and came through every time we
needed his assistance…The gentlemen that worked at
the site, Michael Bailey, Willie Brooks, Larry Johnson, Julio
Martinez, Darris Robinson, William Sverada, Leroy Wilson,
Joe Bellenmoe, Carlos Crispin, Mike Johnson, Nicholas Mincene,
Anvi Rustemovski and Larry Trongone, are exceptionally talented
and were truly honored to be part of such a sacred project…”
