Workers Memorial Day
On April 28th, the anniversary of the Occupational Safety
and Health Administration and the Day of Mourning in Canada,
BAC will join with other unions to remember workers who
have suffered and died on the job. Each year in the U.S.
alone, 60,000 workers die from occupational illness and
nearly 6,000 are killed on the job. “We believe that
every worker has the right to return home in the same shape
as when they left,” says Executive Vice President
Jerry O’Malley. “This is a basic right that
BAC is willing to fight for.”
Although unions have
made great strides to establish life saving protections
on the job, this progress is in jeopardy.
During the past three years, the Bush Administration
has worked relentlessly to overturn existing regulations
and
stop work on new directives that are urgently needed.
On Workers Memorial Day, take a moment to remember those
workers who lost their lives or became ill because of
preventable workplace accidents and exposures, and place
a call to your members of Congress to voice your support
for stronger OSHA protections.
