Local 1 Washington Hosts Western States Apprenticeship Contest

Local 1 Washington was the proud host of the 2004 Western States Brick & Tile Apprenticeship Contest that took place in May at the Edgewater Hotel on Seattle’s beautiful waterfront, marking the 54th year of the competition. This year’s contest recognized up and coming apprentice bricklayers and tile setters from Locals in Washington, Oregon, Montana, Idaho, California, Nevada, Colorado and Hawaii. A total of 24 apprentice bricklayers and 14 apprentice tile setters competed.

Apprentice tilesetters from Regions 8 and 9 came to Seattle to compete.

Taking first place in the brick category was Local 1 OR’s Sergey Lutsyk. Rick Curwood of Local 1 WA was a close second and Paul Hendershot of Local 3 Washington/Idaho/Montana followed in third place. Members from California swept the tile competition with Tom Leith of Local 3 CA coming in first, Fidel Villegas of Local 18 CA capturing second, and Abel Tellez-Perez taking third place.

A total of 24 apprentice bricklayers competed in the Western States Apprenticeship Contest.
