Editor’s Note: Mel Hoover, Sr., a retired contractor
and 40-year member of Local 1 Washington, began his career
later than most, in his mid-thirties. It wasn’t long
after learning his trade in the residential field that Hoover
realized his talent for building fireplaces. Fireplaces became
his specialty and the element of his craft he enjoyed most
until his retirement.
Hoover, who will be 95 next year, is
still lively and strong, which he attributes to a life
filled with hard work, good
diet and – most importantly – enjoyment of the
world around him.

Sr. |
I’m a Local 1 Washington Member
(Seattle, WA) BAC Union. I’ve been a member about
42 years and laid cement, blocks, stone and brick for about
52 years before
I retired.
I’m going on 95 years young. I keep
moving, walking, short hikes, play cards, do puzzles,
attempting to keep
the mind and body active. Lost my wife Rosie; going
on four years. We were married 69 years and I still
love
her, miss her. She was Italian therefore we ate pasta,
salads, prescribed with lots of garlic to keep the
blood pressure and cholesterol low. Along with spices,
onions,
basil, oregano, etc. It’s about a recipe of staying
healthy.
As for being a mason contractor in Tacoma,
WA, it was a real great career. You see, I can still
lift a brick
or two with a trowel in the other hand!
I do reside
now with my son Mel, Jr. and his wife Mary, who now prepare
the meals, which still prescribe
the
spices and garlic daily in our meals. Diet, health,
is a big factor to stay healthy. Work hard, retire
young,
and enjoy your life!!
Sincerely,
Mel Hoover, Sr.
