IMI On the Job: Creating Work for BAC Members

In today’s competitive construction environment IMI uses every angle to make sure members’ contributions create new work opportunities for them. The angle this time – make IMI involvement a requirement and we’ll connect you with the skilled BAC craftworkers to do the job.

In Chicago, as a result of relationships IMI developed with the architects and contractors on earlier projects, Architect Holabird & Root made a “masonry pre-construction meeting with IMI” a project requirement in the specifications for the Chicago Housing Authority Robert Lawrence Apartments restoration project. According to Scott Conwell, IMI’s Area Marketing Director, in making this decision “Holabird and Root Architects and Walsh Construction said they are confident in IMI's ability to take a role in their projects that will ensure maximum quality of the masonry work.”

From IMI’s perspective the only way to “ensure maximum quality” is to use a BAC signatory contractor and BAC members on a project.

General contractor Walsh Construction agreed by ‘strongly encouraging’ VOA architects and Sandsmith Masonry to hold a masonry pre-construction meeting with IMI on the Stateway Redevelopment project.

The end result – BAC-signatory contractor Sandsmith Masonry was awarded both of these projects.
