BAC Bates Scholarship

Let BAC help take the bite out of rising college costs. If your son or daughter is a junior in high school, he or she could be eligible to receive a BAC Bates Scholarship!

Who is eligible?

Sponsored by the International Union, the Bates Scholarship program is open to sons and daughters (natural or adopted) of BAC members of U.S. Locals (active or retired) in good standing, who are currently juniors in high school. In addition, applicants must:

  • Take the standardized “PSAT” exam – a test given to juniors by most high schools each fall (Note: If a high school does NOT conduct the PSAT, students should check with their guidance office to find out when and where it can be taken in their area); and
  • Plan to graduate in spring 2006, and attend college in fall 2006.

What are the awards?

Two Bates Scholarships will be awarded in April 2006. Each student will receive $2,000 per year, for up to four years.

How does my son or daughter apply?

Just complete and send a one-page application to the International Union on or by March 1, 2005. Application forms and further details are available online at www.bacweb.org — click on Member Benefits, then Education. Requests can also be made by calling 1-888-880-8222 ext. 3111 or emailing askbac@bacweb.org.

U.S. Bates Scholars

Each spring, two deserving high school students whose parents are members of BAC Locals in the U.S. are selected to receive the IU’s BAC Bates Scholarship. The program’s 2004 recipients, pictured left and right, are both within a few weeks of completing their first college semesters.

University of Notre Dame freshman Danielle Fedele, daughter of Ralph Fedele of 5 NY, plans to pursue a career in architecture.   Julie Shi, daughter of Local 5 NY member Xiu Shi, is majoring in biochemistry
