2004 Craft Award Winners

In June, BAC President John J. Flynn and the IU Executive Board presented 26 BAC Craft Awards to Union officers, craftworkers, and contractors as part of the BAC Executive Council’s spring meeting in St. Louis, Missouri. Now in its 21st year, the BAC Craft Awards program recognizes the talented professionals who make North America’s unionized masonry industry second to none. President Flynn told the assembled 2004 recipients, “Your achievements, which honor the rich history, tradition, and artistry of skilled masonry craftsmanship, have made an indelible contribution toward ensuring a brighter, stronger future not only for BAC craftworkers and contractors, but for the communities in which we live and work.”

Best Brick Project
Local 4 Indiana/Kentucky
Purdue Alumni Center
West Lafayette, Indiana

Signatory Contractor: James Scharer Masonry

After seven months on the job, members of Local 4 Indiana/Kentucky, working for James Scharer Masonry, put the final touches on Purdue University’s Alumni Center and courtyard. The $10.6 million Center features a multi-story brick and limestone curtain wall exterior, embellished with intricate arches and limestone detail.

The 67,000 square-foot, three-story building is the new home of the Purdue Alumni Association and University Development office. The Center also includes the Spurgeon Hall of Spirit, where visitors can learn about Purdue’s history and achievements through interactive kiosks and exhibits, as well as conference rooms, and kitchen and dining facilities.

The project’s design and overall complexity were demanding tests of the craftworkers’ skills, and Local 4 members passed with flying colors, earning the coveted Best Brick Project in 2004.
