BAC Moving Forward With Technology
Volume 2 - 2006

Computers, the Internet, voice messaging systems, and cell phones are with us to stay. At the 2005 Convention, delegates passed several resolutions identifying ways that these advances in technology could help us communicate more efficiently with members and the public, improve members’ access to benefit information, streamline administrative processes, and meet government reporting requirements.

At the IU level, we’re actively implementing these resolutions. In the short time since the Convention, the IU has rolled out a new website – www.BAConthemove.org. This new site has tools to help Local officers implement our strategic plan, the Millennium Morning Project. In addition, members can now use their member number to access “member only” sections of our website, including BAC’s new and improved Job NETwork™. The Job NETwork™ was developed to connect members looking for work with job opportunities.

Whether you use the Internet, attend meetings, or read the Journal and other Union communications – the important thing is to stay connected with BAC.

Our affiliated organizations – IMI, IPF and IHF – are also moving forward with new web-based features to make our members’ lives easier on and off the job. Making sure that members who travel for work receive timely credit for benefit contributions earned outside of their home Local is now just a few key strokes and a click away with the introduction of the Electronic Reciprocal Transfer System.

IMI’s new web-based Training Management System is making it easier for members to keep track of the training they received. The system, managed by the JATCs, also helps contractors in need of members with specific skills or certifications to connect with these members, and in turn, provides members with up-to-date training information when they need it.

Our Locals’ progress is also impressive. Today, the vast majority have email addresses, and the number with websites is growing.

The cover story in this issue highlights different ways our Union is using technology to improve member services, and highlights some of the terrific features being offered on some of our Local Union sites.

I encourage you to logon to our website at www.bacweb.org, take a look at all the information available, and visit some of the Local sites that are linked to us by clicking on “About Us” and going to “Related Links” (www.bacweb.org/aboutus/links.htm). Whether you use the Internet, attend meetings, or read the Journal and other Union communications – the important thing is to stay connected with BAC.

Flynns Honored by Irish American Democrats
On April 26th, Senator Hillary Clinton (D-NY) presented a “Lifetime Achievement” award to President John J. Flynn and his wife, Joyce, at a dinner hosted in their honor by the Irish American Democrats, an organization dedicated to advancing the peace initiatives in Ireland begun by former President Bill Clinton. Senator Clinton praised the Flynn’s dedication to the labor movement at home and abroad, and noted, “I’m a little hesitant to give the Flynns a ‘lifetime’ achievement award because, number one, the Flynns are not finished, and number two, there’s still a lot of work to be done.”
