New Legislative Direction

Speaker of the House-elect Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) announced an ambitious 100-hour blitz when the new Congress convenes in January 2007 to pass legislation “to make our nation safer and our economy fairer.” Their goals include:

  • raising the federal minimum wage
  • making college loans more affordable
  • compeling drug companies to negotiate with the government to lower prescription drug costs for seniors
  • energizing America’s energy independence.

In September, Local 3 California President Jim Bresnahan, far right, presented a Local 3 jacket to Speaker of the House-to-be Nancy Pelosi (D-CA). Also pictured, from left, are Local 3 Health & Welfare Fund attorney George Kraw and retiree Lenair Chess.
