Best Brick & Stone Project
Local 16, Northern Ohio
Administrative District Council

Morley Library
Painesville, OH

Signatory Contractor:
R.P. Carbone Company
Architect/Designer:
Meehan Architects

The outstanding work of Local 16 Ohio members, with help from Locals 5 and 7 Ohio, is showcased throughout Morley Library. It encompasses approximately 47,600 square feet spanning three stories, plus a 13,000 square foot basement and a 5,000 square foot mechanical penthouse.

The library’s masonry exterior, featuring banded stone base and trim, brick veneer, Fiber Reinforced Polymer decorative insets, trim bands and cornice, adds architectural depth and interest to a steel frame structural system with composite floor decks and wood clad windows.

The $8.5 million project, which took over a year and a half to complete, required approximately 110,000 bricks – one-third sturbridge and two-thirds bison modular size, sanded smooth.

Central elements of the rectangular design include bays, pilasters, trim bands and cornice that form stepped layers to the exterior surface. A striking circular corner entryway with base columns and bands constructed from sandstone quarried in Amherst, Ohio further enhances the building.
