| Rallying on behalf of American working families at the U.S. Capitol are BAC President John J. Flynn, above, and at right Senator Robert Menendez (D-NJ), left, with BAC Executive Vice President Gerard Scarano. |
More than 250 BAC Local leaders along with IU officers and staff, joined approximately 1,000 building trades representatives at a “Rally for American Workers” on the afternoon of March 27th at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. as part of the national AFL-CIO Building and Construction Trades Department’s Legislative Conference & Presidential Forum.
BAC President John J. Flynn testified earlier that morning before the House Education and Labor Subcommittee on Workforce Protections on the common but disturbing practice by disreputable employers of intentionally misclassifying workers as independent contractors to cut costs and weasel out of obligations to workers under labor, employment and tax laws. Flynn emphasized the need for existing laws to be enforced and strengthened and urged legislators to work with labor and management to resolve this problem. Complete coverage of President Flynn’s testimony and related BCTD Conference news will be featured in the next issue of the Journal.
