Illinois Apprentices Show They’ve Got What it Takes

On January 13, 2007, the Illinois District Council No. 1 held their annual Apprentice Contest. The event, which took place at the Illinois District Council Training Center (DCTC), included 10 first-year contestants, 14 second-year contestants and seven third-year contestants from Locals 20, 21, 27, 56, and 74 Illinois. Under the supervision of DCTC Director Bob Arnold and staff, apprentices had three hours to layout and construct their project with labor help from pre-job students in the Apprenticeship and Training Program.

In the first-year division, Tim Nordskog of Local 56 took first place followed by Mike Sanello of Local 21 and Mike Westerman of Local 74. In the second-year division, Daniel Sikorski of Local 21 claimed first place with Vanessa Casillas of Local 56 coming in second and Sigifredo Lomeli of Local 56 coming in third. Local 56 apprentice Efren Herrera took first place in the third-year division, with Lukosz Zygula of Local 56 coming in second, followed by Shaun Maconaghy of Local 27, who claimed third.

All winners were awarded a smith level, plaque and cash prizes.
