A new chapter for the Union began in 2003 when the IU entered into an agreement to build its new headquarters at 620 F Street, N.W. in Washington D.C. From its conception early that year to its completion in December 2006, the new facility is a fitting home for the “Best Hands in the Business.” Located between the Capitol and the White House, and in the heart of one of the most robust neighborhoods and building markets in the country, the new headquarters is an investment that will serve as a source of pride for BAC members today and in the future.

Built 100% union by BAC members and signatory contractors; Rugo Stone, Baltimore Masonry, Adina, Inc. and Roman Mosaic.

The IU Executive Board broke ground on the new headquarters November 5, 2004. Pictured right, from left, Executive Vice President Gerard Scarano, Secretary-Treasurer James Boland, President John J. Flynn, and Executive Vice Presidents Ken Lambert and Gerald O’Malley.

Members working for Baltimore Masonry installed 54,762 CMU, 39,400 AAC units and 463 cubic yards of concrete block fill for a total of 13,869 work-hours. The stairwells, parking garage lobbies and portions of the building core are constructed of CMU and AAC.

Members employed by Rugo Stone worked roughly 30,000 hours installing more than 32,000 square feet of stone on the building’s interior and exterior.

The exterior cladding consists of French limestone, with accents of Sapphire Brown granite at the windows. The same materials carry into the building, using a combination of French limestone cladding on the walls with both honed and polished Sapphire Brown granite on the floor.

900 square feet of Luna Black was used for exterior site paving, as well as 5,500 square feet of brick paving and 400 linear feet of granite curb.

Members employed by Roman Mosaic, worked a total of 993 hours installing 5,000 square feet of epoxy terrazzo with a combination of marble and glass aggregate, 84 linear feet of precast epoxy treads, and 32 linear feet of expoxy treads and risers.

A combination of rough hewn and smooth finish Mankato-Kasota stone cladding is used at the North conference rooms.

The floor lobbies combine the use of brick as a cladding at the elevator core. The flooring in the elevator lobby is terrazzo, inset with the BAC logo.

A Basaltina stone wall bisects the North-East portion of the floor, providing an accent material within the office space.

Members working for Adina, Inc. spent almost 7,000 hours installing various types of tile throughout the building. Adina, Inc. received a 2007 Washington Building Congress Craftsmanship Award for their work on this project.

The building features: 675 square feet (sq.ft.) of Castel porcelain tile, 7,000 sq.ft. of Technolito Afyon porcelain tile, 2,000 sq.ft. Daltile, 7,500 sq.ft. of Italian Veneto glass tile, 1,200 sq.ft. of Lea Progretto ceramic tile, 200 sq.ft. of Castenea ceramic tile, 860 sq.ft. of Crema Marfil stone and more...

The building is owned in a condominium arrangement with The Shakespeare Theatre Company. BAC owns the top six floors of Class-A office space and three levels of the below-grade parking space.

The main conference center provides a state-of-the-art facility where BAC officers and Locals access and exchange information.

BAC’s ownership of the below-grade parking and upper floor rental space creates a consistent source of revenue for the Union.
