Local 5 New York Promotes the Future of Masonry
On March 30, 2007, hundreds of students from Rockland, Westchester, and Putnam County high schools in upstate New York traveled to the seventh annual Hudson Valley Construction Career Day at the Rockland Community College Field House to learn what it takes to have a future in the construction industry.
Building trades representatives provided students with firsthand look at the construction trades. Local 5 New York members and officers were on hand to show them what it takes to have a BAC career, and to demonstrate the proper technique for constructing brick walls, reinforcing concrete floors, and much more.
In an industry such as construction, where there is an ever-growing need to replenish the workforce and information is not readily discussed in the high school curriculum, events such as these are quite beneficial.
“This opens the kids’ eyes to a good career path, especially if they don’t have plans to go to college,” Local 5 New York Secretary-Treasurer Manny Valente told a Hudson Valley Journal News reporter. “You earn a good salary, have great benefits and learn valuable skills.”
The students were definitely excited to learn what the construction industry has to offer. When asked by a Journal News reporter what he thought of the event, Billy Kelly of Hendrick High School in Montrose said, “It’s cool. You get to try out some different things. I might want to do this in the future, so it’s a good opportunity.”
