Local & Regional Apprentice Contests

A series of Local and Regional apprentice contests have fueled anticipation as the countdown continues to the final phase of competition, the International Apprentice Contest, which will be held September 21st and 22nd at the new National Training Center (see article).

The following section is dedicated to all the apprentices who competed their hearts out in recent months to give their “BAC best” at the Local and Regional contests.

LOCAL CONTESTS

Local 15 Missouri/Kansas

Local 15 Missouri/Kansas held their Apprenticeship & Training Bricklaying Contest on June 9, 2007 at its Kansas City Training Center. Fifteen contestants participated in the competition, which consisted of a three and a half hour project and one-hour written exam.

The competition was overseen by Local 15 Training Director Don Hunt and Bricklaying Instructor Chuck Dykes. Masonry Superintendent for Dicarlo Construction, Bob Quayle, served as Head Judge. Also judging were Masonry Field Supervisor for JE Dunn Construction Company Bill Swisher, Project Manager/Estimator for Hoffman Cortez General Contractors Rick Riley, and Masonry Field Supervisor for DMI Construction Travis Claypole.

Contestants were judged in 11 major categories – plumb, level, range, height and coursing, layout, tooling and neatness, trowel manipulations, level and ruler manipulations, mortar joints, craftsmanship and neatness, and safety.

First Place winner Michael Kimberling.

Michael Kimberling was awarded first place, Scott Lawson took second and Daniel Beemer third.

Training Director Hunt said of the event, “The hands-on portion of the contest was very close – they all did an outstanding job.”

All winners received a new Smith Level, as well as the chance to compete at the North Central Regional Brick Contest.

LOCAL CONTESTS

Local 1 Missouri

On May 12, 2007, Local 1 Missouri held its Apprentice Contest at the Local’s Training Center in Earth City, Missouri. Eleven bricklayer and three PCC apprentices participated in the eight-hour event.

The competition began at 7am with introductions and a written exam, after which apprentices began the “hands-on” component of the contest. The brick competition required contestants to build a 2’8’’x 4’7 5/8” wall with two different courses of brick. The PCC competition required apprentices to replace missing brick, tuckpoint mortar joints, install a missing angle iron, weep rope and end dams, install flashing and backer rod, and patch and install stone.

In the brick category, Stanley McCall, III came in first place, followed by Nick Harris and Christopher Bishop.

Jim Moore took first place honors in the PCC category, with Jon Starr in second and Paul Mattingly in third.

The brick contest was overseen by two retired bricklayers and a retired contractor. The PCC contest was overseen by a PCC contractor and a journeyman tuckpointer. All winners received prizes and a chance to compete at the North Central Regional Contests.

LOCAL CONTESTS

Local 3 Massachusetts/Maine/New Hampshire

Local 3 Massachusetts/Maine/New Hampshire’s Apprentice Contest on June 16, 2007 began with breakfast and some inspiring words from Boston Mayor Thomas Menino. This special start was followed by a three-hour competition, which took place at the Local’s Training Center in Dorchester, Massachusetts.

The competition was divided into three crafts – brick, tile and PCC. Twenty contestants participated in the brick competition, seven participants competed in tile, and 10 in PCC.

Executive Vice President and Apprentice Director Richard Forcione coordinated the event. Judging the brick category were Local 3 members Robert Petrillo, Joe Goncalves and Donavon Stennett. Members David Maturo and Michael Maher judged the PCC competition, and Robert Troiano judged the tile competition.

Taking top honors in brick were Erik Spero, followed by Andrew Cabral, Matthew Rumson and Emerson Coleman.

Gary D’Ambra, Jr. took first place in tile with Kevin Fetty coming in second.

Alfred Minor was the first place winner in PCC, with Ryan Anderson and Jonatthan Mezmar coming in second and third, respectively.

All winners received cash prizes and the chance to compete at the Northeast Regional Contest held in July. John Cepeda, winner of the Local’s 2006 brick competition, also advanced to the Regional level.

LOCAL CONTESTS

Northern Ohio Administrative District Council

In June, 45 apprentices in the Northern Ohio Administrative District Council competed in brick, tile, cement, stone, and marble categories at the recently completed 36,000 square-foot NOADC Regional Training Center in Hudson, Ohio.

Apprentices under the direction of NOADC Director Robert Fozio and Apprentice Coordinator Anthony McCullough were required to complete a one-hour exam with a total of 40 math, trade-specific, and union-related questions before moving on to a four-hour, 15-minute hands-on project.

In the brick category, Ryan Mayberry of Local 8 took top honors, Kurt Hupp of Local 46 came in second, followed by Frank Lohmier, Jr. of Local 7 in third. Jennifer Graham of Local 43 and Jeffery Agerter of Local 46 took fourth and fifth place.

Local 16’s Dan Heller won the cement competition.

Bill Dunlap, Jr. of Local 36 took first place in tile.

Winners of the PCC, stone, and marble competitions in that order were Jon Sprachmann, Chris Hoagland, and Michael Ward – all of Local 5.

The winners received cash prizes and the chance to compete at the North Central Regional Contests.

They were assisted by Tiffany Yohman, Shelley Mateja, Laurel Neilson and Kathy Hawkins of the NOADC and Training Center staffs.

LOCAL CONTESTS

Southern Ohio Administrative District Council

It was all smiles and cheers on Saturday, June 16th as the Southern Ohio Administrative District Council conducted their 2007 Apprentice Contest at the AFL-CIO Union Industries Show in Cincinnati, Ohio. A total of 12 contestants in the brick and tile competitions participated in the event. The show also offered a Celebrity Bricklaying Contest, and bricklaying and tilesetting demonstrations.

SOADC Training and Apprentice Coordinator Ted Linscott oversaw the event. Local 45 member and former SOADC Executive Committee member Ron Dowler, West Virginia Apprentice Coordinator Chris Ford, West Virginia Area Organizer Steve Ruple and former Kentucky Job Corps Instructor Paul Wooton served as judges.

Local 18 apprentice Josh Bollinger won first place in the brick category, followed by Gary Vermillion of Local 52 and Ryan Hephner of Local 3.

Local 55 apprentice Greg Gibson was the overall winner of the tile competition.

First place winners received a trophy, and all brick winners received cash prizes donated by Local 45. Local 55 donated awards for the tile competition. Winners went on to compete at North Central Regional Contests.

LOCAL CONTESTS

Local 4 Indiana/Kentucky

Local 4 Indiana/Kentucky kept busy this summer hosting two Local Apprentice Contests – the tile competition was held on June 22nd and the brick on July 13th.

Brick
A total of 29 contestants were divided into three categories – 1st, 2nd and 3rd year apprentices. In the 3rd year category, Dustin Louck came in first place, Kyle Higham in second and Don Summar in third. In the 2nd year group, Craig Glaser took top honors, followed by Seth Ostler and Tim Hoopingarner. Among the 1st year apprentices, Stuart McManus took first place, Wes Myers came in second, and Tom Barzyk took third. Winners received cash prizes and moved on to the North Central Regional Brick Contest in Addison, Illinois.

Judging the competition were members Jerry Kusk, Irvin Overmyer, Jerry Sandman, Bob Kinnett, Bill Lee, Charles Kanning, and Marc Schneider, Job Corps Instructor Jonas Elmore, member and signatory contractor Steve Russell, and Evan Sutton of the Masonry Contractors Association.

Tile
Tile contestants were charged with constructing a 4¼ x 4¼ wall tile with a diamond pattern and a 2x2 floor tile set fresh in a mud bed. Adding to the challenge, two walls with corners needed to be floated with wall mud. Five apprentices competed in the daylong competition.

Trina Carr took first place followed by David Rose and John McCammon. Each winner was awarded a notched trowel trophy mounted on a marble base and plated in gold, silver and bronze respectively. Trina Carr advanced to the North Central Regional Tile Contest in Kansas City, Missouri.

Judging the competition were Local 4 members Lewis Carraro, Herschell Waltz and Ray Powell, and IU Regional Representative and Tile/Marble/Terrazzo Craft Director John Mason. Overseeing the event were Local 4 Secretary-Treasurer Jerry Brown, and Field Representatives Mike Avila, Matt Singer, Kevin McClanahan, Dale Johnsen and Greg Waltz. Local 4 Instructors Dan Claphen, Kevin Thomas, Greg Tucker and Scott Wooldridge also assisted.

REGIONAL CONTESTS

North Central

Brick & Plaster
On July 28, 2007, the North Central Brick and Plaster Regional Apprentice Contest was held at the Illinois District Council Training Center in Addison, Illinois. Thirty-three bricklayer apprentices and eight plaster apprentices competed.

Brick contestants were charged with constructing a wall of modular brick and 4” CMU with accent brick. For the plaster project, contestants applied various plaster finishes from a one-coat veneer plaster with a diamond finish to a sand finish EIFS on a prefabricated foam cornice. The addition this year of a
Venetian Plaster component to the project turned out to be a real crowd pleaser.

Winners in the brick category, starting with first place, were Daniel Sikorski of Local 21 IL, Steve Powers of 9 MI, Craig Glaser of 4 IN/KY, Stanley McCall, III of 1 MO, Vanessa Casillas of 56 IL, Jeffery Agerter of 46 OH, Scott Lawson of 15 MO/KS, Kyle Higham of 4 IN/KY, Kurt Hupp of 46 OH, Mike Kimberling of 15 MO/KS, Daniel Beemer of 15 MO/KS, Terrance Vaughn of 1 MI, Michael Smith of 1 MN/ND, Kurt Fisher of 6 IL, Bronson Harris of 9 MI and Josh Bollinger of 18 OH.

In the plaster category, Jeronimo Esparza of Local 56 IL took top honors with
Cheyen Garcia of Local 74 IL in second and Felipe Jimenez, also of Local 74,
taking third.

District Council Training Center Director Bob Arnold and staff oversaw the event. Judges for the brick category were Local 21 IL Secretary-Treasurer Mike Lowery, Local 74 IL Business Manager Greg Posch, WI ADC Field Representative Randy Weytens, members Tom Crane (1 MO), Gerry Jenniges
(1 MN/ND), Gerald Kusek (4 IN/KY), Terry Stevens (3 IA), contractor representative Angelo Trapani, and signatory contractors Paul Koch, Jr. and Ross Distefano. Judging the plaster category were Local 74 member Jim Buschman and signatory contractor and member Mike Molloy.

Winners were awarded trophies, tools, gift certificates and the opportunity to compete at the International Apprentice Contest in Washington, D.C.

Cement
Shortly after hosting its own Apprentice Contest, the NOADC Regional Training Center was pressed into action again on July 7th, this time for the North Central Regional Cement Apprentice Contest.

Beginning at 8am, apprentices spent seven grueling hours constructing identical cement mock-ups. The contest was overseen by NOADC Apprentice Coordinator Anthony McCullough, Illinois District Council Training Center Director Robert Arnold, Local 1 MN/ND Apprentice Coordinator Mark Wickstrom, and IU North Central Regional Director Henry Kramer. Judging the competition were NOADC Field Representative Ken Kastelic and Joe Dalton of the WV ADC.

Of the apprentices who competed, five advanced to the International Apprentice Contest in Washington, D.C.: Dan Heller of Local 16 OH; Jason McMahon and William Cuthbert of Local 9 MI; and Robert Goodrich and Randy Jansen of Local 9 WI.

Marble/Terrazzo
Also advancing to the International Apprentice Contest were Mike Ward of Local 5 OH and Piotr Rapanovich of Local 1 MN/ND in the marble category, and Gregery Lasley of Local 4 IN/KY in the terrazzo category.

Stone
The mood was upbeat at the North Central Regional Stone Apprentice Contest as hopeful participants competed for the chance to advance to the International Apprentice Contest in Washington, D.C. The two-day event took place at the Local 1 Minnesota/North Dakota Training Center in St. Paul, Minnesota.

The first day, July 20th, was set aside for the Contest’s written exam, with the second day dedicated to construction of the stone mock-ups. Apprentices were instructed to replicate the 2003 International Apprentice Contest project, which required them to lay approximately 12.5 feet of Mankato Kasota limestone, set three pieces of limestone sill, fasten three pieces of granite with stainless steel straps, set four granite pavers in a traditional mud bed, insert wire anchors and cut a quirk miter on one end.

Taking first place was Randal Leigh of 8 WI, followed by Scott Neuwirth also of 8 WI, Eric Brichacek of 1 MN/ND and Matthew Fronk of 1 WI. All four contestants will advance to the International Apprentice Contest in September.

The highly successful event was the result of a lot of hard work and regional coordination. Overseeing the Contest were IU North Central Regional Director Henry Kramer, Local 1 MN/ND President James Lundquist, Apprenticeship Coordinator Mark Wickstrom, Executive Vice President Michael Cook and Vice Presidents Michael Hawthorne and Michael Ganz, IMI Regional Training Director Michael Papp, NOADC Apprentice Coordinator Anthony McCullough, IMI Instructor for the WI ADC Mark Graf, and Local 19 WI member Richard Lawson. Judging the competition were Lawson and members Bob Steinbring, Harold Stener, Merwin Perkins, and Gerald Jenniges.

All contestants received London Trowels, and first, second and third place winners were awarded trophies.

Tile
Ten tile apprentices from throughout the North Central Region, along with their Local coordinators and business representatives, gathered at the Local 15 Missouri/Kansas Training Center on July 14th to participate in the Regional Tile Apprentice Contest. The Contest lasted approximately seven hours.

Local 15 MO/KS President Steve Mullen oversaw the event with the help of Tile Coordinator Tom Murillo and Training Director Don Hunt. Judging the event were James Higgins, Local 67 IL Business Representative Gary Pawlowski, and Local 18 MO President Tim Mueller.
The Local 15 tile finishers were also commended for their contributions to the contest and were “honored to be part of the competition,” according to Murillo.

Local 36 OH apprentice Bill Dunlap, Jr. came in first place, Tim Jakob of Local 67 IL came in second, and Eric Lust of Local 15 MO/KS took third.

Each winner was awarded a trophy and level. Winners will be moving on to the International Apprentice Contest.

PCC
On July 27, 2007, Local 52 Illinois hosted the North Central Regional PCC Apprentice Contest in Chicago. Eight apprentices participated in the event.

After completion of the written exam, contestants moved to the hands-on portion of the competition, where they installed lintel with a drip lip, flashing with end dams, a termination bar, weeps and matching brick. They were then instructed to tuckpoint the brick side of the mock-up with a flat flush joint. During the stone portion, contestants were required to set a loose stone with two 4” pins, point the mock-up with a flat flush joint and patch a spall on the stone wall’s corner with Edison Coatings Stone patch material. Contestants then caulked 24 linear feet of sealant with GE Silpruf on a limestone wall, and finally, tied several knots and set up a shackle with a cable and three fist grips.

Local 52 apprentices Florin Bejerea, Carlos Jimenez, Carmine Chieco and Stan Radzik won first, second, third and fourth place, respectively. Jon Sprachmann of 5 OH came in fifth place. First, second and third place contestants received awards, and all five finalists will go on to the International Apprentice Contest.

The Contest was organized by Local 52 IL Apprentice Coordinator Michael Hunt and Apprentice Instructors Hector Arellano, Dave Laninga, Dave Tedeschi, Mike Turner, Gary Wittenberg and Andy Kwicien. IU Regional Representative Tom McClanahan also attended the event. Local 52 members John Polivka and retirees Jules Guiesmeyer and Bob Reining, along with retired IU PCC Craft Director Joe Stewart, served as judges.

REGIONAL CONTESTS

SOUTH

In mid-June, apprentices were joined by Local officers as they headed to Houston, Texas for the South Regional Brick Apprentice Contest held at the Local 5 OK/AR/TX BAC/IMI Training Center. IU Regional Representative and Stone Craft Director Butch Rovder coordinated the event with help from IMI Instructor Keith Behrens.

Contestants began the competition on Friday, June 15th with a written exam. On Saturday, June 16th, apprentices competed in the three-hour “hands-on” portion of the event. Behrens and retired Local officer Jack Stubbs served as judges.

Taking first and second place in the contest were Local 1 MD/VA/DC apprentices Josh Guptill and Matthew Beck, respectively, and Felix Navarro of Local 5 TN earned third place. All contestants received cash prizes and the three winners will advance to the International Apprentice Contest.

REGIONAL CONTESTS

WEST

On June 9, 2007, Local 13 Nevada, under the leadership of President Carlos Aquin, hosted the West Regional Apprentice Contest in Las Vegas, with fifty apprentices competing in brick, marble, and tile.

Apprentices from Local 18 CA dominated the tile competition with Jose Licea coming in first, Ignacio Sanchez in second, and Jose Perez in third place. Local 1 HI apprentice Anthony Freitas, Jr. claimed the number four spot, while Solomon Nutter and Scott McMahon of Local 1 WA took fifth and sixth place. Local 3 CA apprentice Aristeo Delgado placed seventh.

Bryan Pritchett of Local 3 CA earned top honors in the marble competition. Local 13 NV apprentices Steve Hasek, Jr., Sal Formica and Scott Bliss took second, third and fourth place. Fifth place was awarded to Victor Zarza of Local 3 CA, sixth place went to 1 WA’s Cory Evons, and David Bravo of 4 CA claimed seventh place.

Winners in the brick competition, starting with first place, were Justin Jones of Local 3 CA, Jacob Amos of 1 OR, Angelo Anselmo of 7 CO, Jose Perez of 3 CA, Anthony Richardson  of 13 NV, Ryan Green of 3 CA, and Thomas King of 7 CO.

IU West Regional Director David Sheppard, retired IU Regional Director John Franco, and retired Local 4 CA President Frank Collins judged the brick competition. IU Collective Bargaining Director Mike Maness, Local 13 NV member Jerry Wyatt of Superior Tile & Marble, and Brandon Zahnow of Local 1 WA served as the tile judges. IU Regional Representative and Tile/Marble/Terrazzo Craft Director John Mason, Chris Kreitlow of Local 13 NV, and Project Manager Bill Markworth were the marble judges.

Qualified winners will advance to the International Contest.

nORTHEAST

After months of meticulous planning, the Northeast Regional Apprentice Contest was held on July 18, 2007 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Hosted by the BAC Northeast Regional Contest Committee and Local 1 Pennsylvania/Delaware, 60 apprentices representing 15 Locals throughout the Region competed in five separate categories – brick, stone, tile, marble, and PCC.

IU Northeast Regional Director Al Catalano oversaw the event with assistance from IU Regional Representative and PCC Craft Director John Wurtenberg, IMI Northeast Regional Training Director Bob Mion and Local 1 PA/DE Training Director Bob Powers.

Winners in the brick category were: first place winner Erik Spero of Local 3 MA/ME/NH, followed by Steve Zellem of 9 PA, John Cepeda of 3 MA/ME/NH, Anthony Jenkins of 1 PA/DE, Michael Carey of 5 NJ, Matt Skvarj of 9 PA, Kenneth LaValle of 1 NY, Jared Jack of 9 PA, William Cephas of 1 PA/DE, Aubrey Walton of 1 NY and John Burke of 2 NY.

Taking top honors in stone were first place winner Ryan Scalise of Local 9 PA, followed by Philip Schon of 5 NJ, Gregory Stiehl of 4 NJ, Greg Crowningshield of 3 NY, John Pittarelli of 3 NY, Ryan Robinson of 1 PA/DE, and David Cline of 1 NY.

Gary D’Ambra, Jr. of Local 3 MA/ME/NH and Kevon Maynard of 7 NY/NJ took
first and second place respectively in the tile category, with Tyson Trode finishing a very close third.

Taking first and second place in the marble competition were Raymond Gudehus and Christopher Schramm of Local 7 NY/NJ, and Michael Pizzi of 1 PA/DE took third.

Christopher Bodner of Local 1 PA/DE took first place in the PCC contest, followed by Greg Chin of 1 NY, Karl Chamberlain of 1 CT, Brian Crnjarich of 9 PA, Damien Barnes of 5 NJ, Jonatthan Mezmar of 3 MA/ME/NH, Sharief Maynard of 1 NY, Kenny Chau of 1 NY, John Otto, Jr. of 1 PA/DE, Kevin Wagner of 1 NY, and Eugene McAndrew of 3 NY.

Judging the brick competition were retired IU Vice President Alfred DiRienzo and members Scott Stringer (3 NY), Nick Reale and Tom Feeney (NJ ADC), and William Grizzel and Alonzo Freeman (3 MA/ME/NH). IU Regional Representative and Tile/Marble/ Terrazzo Craft Director John Mason and Richard Williamson (3 MA/ME/NH) judged the tile competion. Judges for stone and marble were retired Local 5 PA President Deeter Garman, IU Regional Representative and Stone Craft Director Butch Rovder and Raymond Nordberg (NJ ADC). Judges for the PCC competition were Tim Hayes (3 NY) and retired IU PCC Craft Director Joe Stewart. Local 5 PA Field Representative Laine Gehres and John Totten of 5 NY judged the plaster category.

Winners received cash prizes and plaques and will be advancing to the International Apprentice Contest in Washington, D.C.

Cement apprentices Vincent Commisso of 2 NY, David Cucura of 5 PA, DeLip Dervishi of 4 NJ and Justin Tagliamonte of 5 NY, and terrazzo apprentice Benjamin Panaro of 7 NY/NJ, were also chosen to advance to the International Contest.
