October 2003 - Masonry Month in Washington, D.C. - marked
the debut of a national exhibition that explores the untapped
potential of masonry and offers this challenge:
Sponsored by the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied
Craftworkers (BAC) and the International Masonry Institute
(IMI), the National Building Museum exhibition featured four
renowned architects taking four masonry materials – stone,
brick, terrazzo and AAC – in new directions in collaboration
with expert IMI instructors. The full-scale installations
helped to suggest the unexplored potential of each material.
The exhibition also documented masonry’s contribution
to today’s built environment, and challenged visitors
to question masonry’s future direction in architectural
design. Lectures and hands-on design seminars completed the
program.
The exhibition was curated by Stanley Tigerman,
FAIA, of
Tigerman McCurry Architects in Chicago, Illinois.
The National Building Museum is America’s premier
cultural institution dedicated to exploring and celebrating
architecture, design, engineering, construction and urban
planning. In addition to Masonry Variations, the National
Building Museum is host to many other exciting BAC/IMI events.
