March - April 2004
Following a theme started last fall with our first issue
of the Journal in its new format, this edition focuses
once again on our members’ achievements, giving special
recognition to the winners of the 2003 Craft Awards. As
you look at the pictures and read the stories behind each
award, I’m sure you’ll be as impressed as I
am with the quality of the work and the dedication of the
members and officers honored. Everyone can appreciate the
beauty of the finished product, but only a skilled craftworker
can fully grasp what’s involved in taking a raw material
and transforming it into a work of art or a structure that
will endure for centuries.

Among those honored are members receiving awards for leadership
and community service. These individuals are the face of
our Union. Each, in their own way, has done much to show
the next generation of members and the public the important
role that our Union plays in the industry, our members’ lives,
and society.
Each project, each member who worked on the project, each
individual recognized in these pages is worthy of these
2003 Craft Awards.
In the months ahead, we look forward to showcasing members
at work, providing you with information on economic and
work trends, and bringing you up to date on what’s
new in the areas of health, safety, benefits, and reciprocity.
Since this is a presidential election year, we’ll
also provide you with candidates’ voting records
as November draws closer.
I encourage you to stay informed and involved, and let
us know your thoughts and suggestions. Not a day goes by
that I’m not reminded of who I report to – namely
you, the members.
If you have ideas for stories or issues of concern, let
us know by emailing us at askbac@bacweb.org or
