IPF Data Shows Positive Safety Trend

Alan Cohn of The Segal Company presents the IPF actuarial report at the fall Regional Council meetings.

At the latest round of BAC Regional Council Meetings, Local officers received a report on the actuarial status of the Bricklayers and Trowel Trades International Pension Fund (IPF). In the course of Council discussions, it was noted that BAC’s efforts to promote safer and healthier working conditions are paying off.

According to the IPF actuarial report prepared by The Segal Company, between 1992 and 2000, the number of disability pension awards declined by 73 percent—from 201 in 1992, to 54 in 2000. “That’s an important and positive trend,” says BAC Secretary-Treasurer Jim Boland. “It indicates that our efforts to negotiate better working conditions and to educate members on how to avoid job-site hazards are working.”

That is not all the good news. During this same period the average monthly disability pension awarded increased from $301 to $515 thanks to benefit improvements implemented by IPF’s Trustees.
