Local 3 MA/ME/NH Expands Annual Apprentice Contest

For years, the apprentice contest sponsored by Local 3 Massachusetts/Maine/New Hampshire has spotlighted and rewarded its apprentices’ hard work and training. The 2005 contest marked the first time that three contests were held simultaneously for bricklaying, masonry restoration/waterproofing (PCC), and tile at the Local’s Training Center in Dorchester, MA.

Brick contestants were required to build a brick and block cavity wall with a two-foot return while judges rated the various assemblies for level, plumb, and overall accuracy. Taking first place in this category was Joseph Fazio. Glen Bauer claimed second place, Luis Torres took third place, and Richard Sullivan came in fourth.
The restoration (PCC) contestants were judged on stone patching, caulking, flashing and air barrier installation, and pointing existing brickwork. Sean Riley was awarded first place, Patrick Folan took second, and Richard Giordano claimed third.
In the tile installation contest, apprentices used a variety of tile setting and finishing skills. They prepared a wall for tile, installed four 1/4-inch tile on an angle, and installed 2x2-inch mosaic tile on a mud floor. First place was awarded to Michael Guarino, with John Ross Montenero coming in a close second.
The apprenticeship program includes a 10-week pre-job training program and 5,000 hours of on-the-job training. Apprentices spend one weeknight in class from September to May and must pass competency tests to determine their skill level before advancing further.
